Teacher Only Day – Friday 19 August

Kia ora whānau,

We hope you’re all safe and well and that you and your children have settled into Term 3 of 2022.

On Thursday 18 August, in the afternoon, we will be holding our annual ‘Whareathon’. This is a cross-country run where any student who takes part – no matter their speed or athleticism – can earn points for their Whare. It’s sure to be a fun day and students are encouraged to bring along clothes/dress-ups in their house colours to run in (just please keep the face paints at home!) and get into the spirit of our Whare competition.

Then, on Friday 19 August, Tangaroa College will be having a Teachers Only Day, so students will not need to be at school on this day.

This particular Teachers Only Day is one of the ‘Accord’ days that the Ministry of Education requires all schools to hold in order to learn about the changes happening to NCEA (our national qualifications) over the next couple of years. The focus for this day will be on proposed new NCEA Level 2 Achievement standards, as well as sharing feedback and findings from pilots the school is taking part in this year.

We look forward to seeing students back at school as normal on Monday 22 August.

Nga mihi,

Ms Clare Nelson
Deputy Principal

Masking Up for Term 3, 2022

Kia ora koutou, Mālō e lelei, Talofa lava, Taloha ni, Kia Orana, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Namaste, Ni sa Bula, Ni Hao, Salaam Alaikum, and Warm Pacific greetings to you all.

Firstly, welcome back to our students and staff for Term 3. We hope everyone is well.
There has been a bit of unsettled weather during the school holidays. In previous years, we have found an increase in winter illnesses in school at the start of the term. This year cases of COVID-19 are increasing in most parts of the country, and we are also seeing high numbers of other winter illnesses.

The Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health strongly recommend that all schools require mask wearing for the first four weeks in all indoor settings from Year 9 to Year 13.

All staff will continue to wear masks, and all students are encouraged to wear masks inside the classrooms to protect themselves, which is appreciated.
Wearing masks can significantly reduce new cases of COVID-19 alongside other measures:

  • Vaccination
  • Good ventilation
  • Staying at home when feeling sick
  • Washing your hands

We know that some students cannot wear masks due to medical reasons. The school will support them, providing they have an exemption card like this:

If they have an exemption card or a letter from their health provider, we will support them in not wearing a mask. If you wish to apply for a face mask exemption pass. Click here: Face Mask Exemption.

Otherwise, please ensure that your tamariki comes to school wearing a mask. The school has a limited supply of masks if needed.

A reminder Board Elections are coming up on the 7th of September, and nominations close on the 3rd of August.
Every parent and caregiver should have received information at the end of last term’s newsletter. Please contact the office if you have not received a notification.

Thank you for your support in protecting our school community.

Noho ora mai

Christine Pili

Acting Principal

Principal Davida Suasua leaves Tangaroa College

Dear Tangaroa College Community,

On behalf of the Tangaroa College Board of Trustees, I sadly and respectfully announce the departure of our Tumuaki, our Principal Davida Suasua. Davida is taking up the position of Principal at Rosehill College in Papakura. She officially leaves Tangaroa College this Friday the 8th of July. Miss Christine Pili has been appointed Acting Principal until the new Principal is appointed.

Davida’s inspirational leadership has shaped each student’s education at Tangaroa College. Her guidance has created an environment in which students and teachers have been able to grow, especially navigating through the pandemic.

When Davida arrived at Tangaroa College over 28 years ago, she brought with her a world class attitude and a professional elegance of love for education and the strive for student excellence. During her time at Tangaroa she excelled her leadership career which saw her become a physical education teacher, to a senior leadership position, to appointment of Principal in 2017.

Davida’s innovative ideas about creating stress-free learning environments were well-received and quickly implemented. The result has been a consistent improvement in student achievement with the help of her team and the amazing number of teachers implementing and delivering the educational learning.

Davida has been able to shape the physical appearance of Tangaroa College, with the changes to the school and front entrance of Tangaroa becoming a welcoming site for visitors, community, and ex-students of the school. She was present at sporting events, wearing Tangaroa College proudly and cheering on the teams. She was an important member of the board and contributed to the meetings.

Thank you, Davida Suasua, for your compassionate, hands-on leadership. We wish you the best as you venture on to a new space in your career journey. You will stay in our hearts as we continue to honour your leadership.

Sincerely,

Karl Tusini-Rex
